An art buddy left a very nice, very preemptive comment stating “finally a comic about god without making fun of him--which seems to be all the rage these days”. Personally, I don’t feel this page is attacking God, per say. To express my own belief, I feel that whatever your religion; Christian, Catholic, Buddhist, Atheist…what is important is that your beliefs give you a sense of purpose and solace. If you often find yourself in moral turmoil, then maybe you should seek another theology that will make life enjoyable and meaningful to you and the people around you.

Onto the art. Father Maethis’ criticism is about the practice of confession. Critiques have been that by only confessing to God, which may make YOU feel better, there’s still a missing crucial aspect: the victim.
No dude, it’s cool now! God said it was a flub that I robbed you!

I’m reminded of (and was probably inspired by) the Bible story about the peeping king when talking about the concept of forgiveness.

In the Bible, there is the story of this king. One night, he TOTALLY BY ACCIDENT witnessed a girl taking a bath. The king thought to himself, "Boobs are awesome. Those boobs are awesome. And since I am awesome, should I not have those awesome boobs?" As it turns out, those boobs were claimed by the king's captain of the guard.

What's a king to do? If you answered "send the captain to the front of the lines in hopes he gets taken out, and then marry the widow", you get 15 adultery points.

At the VERY END of the king's life, he says, "that whole thing was kind of a dink move." and God replies "I know, but it's cool now!"

I’ve also seen such criticism applied towards the justice system. The courts may punish a criminal with jail time, however the victims are still victims without any real compensation save if they go to civil court, and even then it’s just monetary compensation. Suggested solutions to this are that courts should allow victims and communities to propose possible reparations for the offenders rather than putting them in jail to breed a better type of criminal. Example: have the offender repair the damage to the victim’s property, and then a meeting with community leaders can help erase the anonymity the offender had to the victim and the community, making it unlikely for the offender to reoffend the people he now knows.

So, do you think Maethis’ opinion holds water, and where do you think he’s going with this logic?
What about my critique of the justice system; can you see the benefits/possible problems with the grass roots hippie retribution system? Put that in your philosophy pipe and smoke it!

Hmm, an interesting question you pose Cappy. I believe the family that has been wronged should decide the punishment of the offender, depending on the offense. Hard labour and repair work for damaged property and death for murder and rape. No one should go unpunished for crimes done, no matter how insignificent.

*rant time over*

I like the drawing style and the emotions you putting into this cappy, it really draws you in while you question yourself.
